Vancouver participates in national effort for tsunami relief

The City of Vancouver is working with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to contribute to the massive reconstruction effort required by the communities ravaged by last week's tsunami in Asia.

"We're looking for ways we can contribute to the long-term rebuilding effort at the community level," said Mayor Campbell, "and we're in consultation with the FCM on a national initiative to support what Prime Minister Paul Martin has already begun. We're considering ways to offer basic emergency supplies -- from water purification plants, to generators or even the skills of our staff -- to help these communities get back on their feet."

Campbell said the effort would be based on the experience of the Kobe earthquake in Japan, when the federal government helped direct the response from municipalities, and underwrote the cost of shipping equipment and resources to the stricken area.

The City's involvement is being coordinated by Councillor Jim Green, a member of the FCM board. "This is the best way for our city to respond to the tragedy," Green said. "We can make the best long-term contribution by letting Ottawa coordinate while we provide available resources and skills."

Green said he will submit a motion to the January 18 City Council meeting seeking endorsement for the City's involvement. His motion seeks a staff report on the best way to participate in the FCM initiative, as well as the allocation of $100,000 to be disbursed as directed by the FCM to support recovery efforts.
