May 26, 2006City forms strategic partnership to encourage sustainable housing at Southeast False CreekThe City of Vancouver and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding today that will encourage sustainable housing practices at the City-owned Southeast False Creek development. Through its participation in this strategic partnership, CMHC will lend its expertise to the Southeast False Creek design process, providing technical assistance and best practices research. CMHC will also support the design and construction of a net zero energy healthy housing project, a state-of-the-art energy and resource-efficient building that produces as much or more energy as it consumes on an annual basis. CMHC will document the Southeast False Creek development along the way, turning the results into a case study that will serve as a blueprint for sustainable community design. "I'd like to thank the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for joining us in this landmark endeavour," said Mayor Sam Sullivan. "We're looking forward to this partnership as we strive to bring the ambitious sustainability vision for Southeast False Creek to reality." "We're pleased to lend our expertise, knowledge and support to the City of Vancouver as it prepares to develop Southeast False Creek," said Nelson Merizzi, General Manager for B.C. of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "Our priority is to create healthy housing and sustainable communities across Canada, and this agreement is a significant milestone in our push towards that goal." Southeast False Creek is a 32-hectare site of City-owned and privately-owned land near downtown Vancouver being redeveloped as a mixed-use sustainable community. The City-owned land will be home to the Vancouver Olympic Village for athletes and officials during the 2010 Winter Games. Afterwards, the area will be transformed into a model sustainable development based on environmental, social and economic principles where people will live, work, play, and learn. Southeast False Creek is expected to house 12,000-16,000 people by 2018. For more information: |
