January 25, 2007Plaza of Nations granted a demolition permitCanadian Metropolitan Properties Corp., owner of the Plaza of Nations, has been granted a permit by the City of Vancouver to demolish the glass canopy roof and adjacent structures within the Plaza of Nations. Enterprise Hall, home of the Edgewater Casino, will not be affected. Late last year, the glass roof over the performance space was deemed unsafe by the City’s Chief Building Official when extensive corrosion was discovered. The owner immediately ceased use of the space and erected hoarding. While the roof covering will be removed for safety reasons, the owner has committed to ensure ongoing open-air use of the outdoor performance venue. A long-term, permanent strategy to rebuild or replace the performance venue will be explored as part of an anticipated review of overall plans for Northeast False Creek.
The structures that comprise the Plaza of Nations - with the exception of Enterprise Hall - were originally designed as temporary facilities for Expo 86. The outdoor performance venue and adjacent structures have been used over the years for entertainment and business purposes. Media contact |
