Youth conduct “Bug Count” in Still Creek on Earth Day

The success of the latest Still Creek restoration project will be celebrated on Earth Day*. During the event, local school children will learn about the ecology of the Creek and participate in environmental stewardship initiatives - including a “Bug Count” (a Benthic invertebrate survey) which surveys the type and number of bugs found in and around a waterway to determine if the stream can support fish life.

FACTSHEET

Progress on Still Creek Restoration

Still Creek is one of the last remaining creeks in urban Vancouver. In 1988, the City adopted a policy to enhance the creek and pursue daylighting of sections of the Creek which had been covered during preceding decades. What has happened since 1988…

1994: City Council approves Inflow and Infiltration Reduction Program in Still Creek area to eliminate sewage discharges to the Creek resulting from sanitary and storm sewer cross-overs.

2000: City establishes the Still Creek/Greenway Enhancement Fund with contributions from the Vancouver Film Studios for the lease of Cornett Road.

2001: City Planning retains consultant (Lees + Associates Consulting) to undertake Still Creek Rehabilitation and Enhancement Study.

2002: City Council adopts Grandview Boundary Industrial Area Policies, including the Still Creek Enhancement Action Plan.

2005:The first enhancement project is carried out at 3003 Grandview Highway in collaboration with the property owner (Grantham Holdings), Metro Vancouver (formerly GVRD), and the Still Creek Stewardship Society; [project designed by Kerr Wood Leidal Consulting Engineers; construction by FWR Ecoresource; 75 meters of creek enhanced at a project cost of $185,000 ($20,000 from GVRD, $20,000 from environmental grants and $145,000 from Still Creek Enhancement Fund (Vancouver Film Studio lease)].

2006: City Council endorses the Still Creek Integrated Storm Water Management Plan (ISMP) which identifies private and public actions to improve storm water management, recreational opportunities and creek health.

2007: The second enhancement project is carried out at 3400 Cornett in collaboration with property owners (B.C. Tropical Shells and Vancouver Film Studios) and Metro Vancouver; [project designed by Jacques Whitford AXYS; construction by Mission Contractors; 155 meters of creek enhanced at a project cost $450,000 ($170,000 from Metro Vancouver and $280,000 from Still Creek Enhancement Fund)]

Next Steps

Creek Daylighting – as part of the new development at 2820 Bentall Street (Canadian Tire site) the City required the daylighting of the Creek. It is anticipated the Creek work will be completed in the summer of 2008.

Creek Enhancement - the City and Metro Vancouver are evaluating options for the next enhancement project at Nootka and Grandview, with a view to carry out the work in the summer of 2009.

Creek Stewardship – the City will work together with the Still Creek Stewardship Society, neighbouring property owners, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the Creek and to do our part to contribute to a healthier global environment.
