Using the Archives

A spacious reading room with a spectacular view of English Bay is open to all for in-house research. Here you will find:

  • in-house finding aids
  • reference materials
  • self-serve materials in microform
  • computer terminals for searching our database

Archivists and reference staff are also available to:

  • discuss projects
  • point out possible archival sources
  • give instructions on how to use the finding aids

All researchers are required to register and present photo ID.

The City of Vancouver Archives does not participate in interlibrary loans.

Obtain reproductions of records

Reproductions of the records held by the Archives may be obtained in many forms. For more information, see Reproduction Services. Reproductions are available subject to copyright, legal, conservation or donor restrictions.

Send an Inquiry

The City of Vancouver Archives receives inquiries by conventional mail, fax, and electronic means. Due to the volume of requests we receive, we are unable to undertake extensive research requests. If you have a specific question about a particular subject, individual or archival holding, we will try to respond to your inquiry in a timely manner. Please note, however that response time may be affected by heavy workloads. If you are planning a visit or have a time-sensitive project, please keep this in mind.

If you are sending your inquiry electronically (archives@vancouver.ca), please include your mailing address so we can respond appropriately. If you live in the area, please also include your telephone number.

Tips for writing an effective inquiry:

  • Ask a specific question. What information or document are you trying to locate?
  • For inquiries concerning an individual, include identifying details such as full name, dates and places, etc.
  • Mention any City of Vancouver Archives sources that you have already consulted, so that we do not duplicate your research or recommend those sources again.
  • Mention any previous correspondence or contact with a staff member you have had with us. This will prompt us to verify our files and avoid any duplication of research.
