Locating Family Members and Friends (Genealogy)

We get requests from people trying to locate missing family and friends. The City of Vancouver Archives is not the primary source of this information.

Here are a few sources that may be of help:

All birth, death and marriage records for Vancouver are held by the
British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency ,

Indexes to B.C. marriages 1872-1925, births 1872-1900 and deaths 1872-1980, are available at: http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/index.htm

Mountain View Cemetery keeps listings of burials.

All Canadian telephone directories

Public libraries in the Lower Mainland: the Vancouver Public Library, Main Branch, History and Government Division, 6th floor, and Surrey Public Library , Cloverdale Branch, both hold microfilm (indexes and records) of

• marriages: 1872-1921
• deaths: 1872-1976

The B.C. Genealogical Society
This website includes links to many resources, an FAQ and an online library catalogue.

The City Archives does hold a few resources for those seeking family information. Researchers must search these records themselves.
