Family Court/Youth Justice Committee


Overview

Legislative Authority

The authority and duties of the Committee are set out in Provincial Legislation. Section 5 of the Provincial Court Act establishes the Family Court Committee. The Youth Justice Committee is appointed pursuant to Section 18 Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The Committee reports annually to the Attorney General of British Columbia and to Vancouver City Council.

Duties

The Committee:

  • considers and examines the resources of the community for family, youth and children's matters
  • advises the City, and advocates to various levels of government and the public, on family, children and youth issues

Reappointment

Committee members are eligible for reappointment. There are no limits on the number of terms served.

Meetings

The Committee generally meets at 6:00 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the City Hall Business Centre, 2nd Floor, Vancouver City Hall.

The Committee is required to officially meet at least four times per year on a quarterly basis, to a maximum of 10 times per year, excluding August and December.

Time Commitment

Committee meetings last for two hours. Members may also be required to spend two to four hours a month on other Committee or Subcommittee work.

Subcommittees

The Family Court/Youth Justice Committee had the following Subcommittees for 2011:

  • Housing and Homelessness Subcommitte

  • Restorative Justice Subcommittee

  • Current Issues Subcommittee

Membership

There is no set number of members for the Committee. All appointments are made by City Council and are effective for one year. Backgrounds in health, education, social services, law or corrections are considered to be assets for potential Committee members.

In appointing members to the Committee, City Council will, where possible, appoint a minimum of four youth 15 to 24 years of age as members.
