Pacific National Exhibition (PNE)


Overview

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is owned and managed by the City of Vancouver.

Membership and Qualifications

The Board of Directors consists of up to eleven members. Seven voting members are appointed by Council. The appointed Board members include the following:

  • Two elected representatives as follows:
    • One Council Member who also serves as Chair to the Board
    • One Park Board Commissioner nominated by the Park Board
  • Two resident representatives as follows:
    • One local area resident representative from the Hastings Sunrise Community bound by Boundary Road, Nanaimo Street, Burrard Inlet, and Broadway
    • One resident representative of the City of Vancouver with a labour relations background
  • Three representatives from the Vancouver business community

The remaining four board members are designated City of Vancouver staff positions that are to serve as directors of the Board as long as they hold their position. The staff positions include the General Managers of Community Services, Financial Services, Human Resources, and Vancouver Park Board.

To qualify for election as a director, the individual must be eighteen years or older, of sound mind, and not have declared bankruptcy.

Mission Statement

To enrich the quality of the life at Hastings Park by providing a wide range of family entertainment and events that invite guests to celebrate Vancouver’s heritage, culture and diverse communities within a vibrant urban public park.

Duties

The Board of Directors plays a leading role in ensuring the success of the PNE. The Board’s vision, while working in harmony with the local and city-wide community, business, management, and staff, ensures the continued success of the PNE. Board members are part of a team of lead decision makers and act as ambassadors for the PNE organization of over 3,700 staff.

The Board of Directors represents various interests in the City. The Board has the power to enact by-laws for the regulation and management of the PNE, to appoint a President and Chief Executive Officer, and to delegate any powers to a director or committees.

The by-laws of the PNE govern and protect the business, borrowing, and issuing of securities, as well as the conduct and remuneration of directors and committees of the organization.

Term of Appointment

The term of appointment for the Board members is as follows:

  • Elected officials – three year term of Office, the term of which is to end on the first Monday following December 1st in the year of a local election
  • Resident representatives – to establish two-year staggered appointments, beginning in 2009, one resident representative member will be appointed for a one-year term and the second resident representative will be appointed for a two-year term. In subsequent years, all terms will be two years in length.
  • Business representatives – to establish two-year staggered appointments, beginning in 2009, one business representative member will be appointed for a one-year term and the remaining two business representative members will be appointed for a two-year term. In subsequent years, all terms will be two years in length.

Meetings

The PNE Board of Directors generally meets six times per year. The meeting schedule is set on a yearly basis, and is subject to change.

Please note: Meetings of the Board are not open to the public.

Time Commitment

In addition to meetings of the Board which can consume the majority of a working day, Directors attend a variety of special events predominately around the time of the Fair.
