Overview

The Vancouver Economic Development Commission is incorporated as a non-profit society.

Membership

There may be a maximum of 5 Ordinary Members of the Commission and two members of the Vancouver City Council may be appointed as Non-Voting Members. Beginning in 2008, Ordinary Members are appointed by Vancouver City Council for one-year, two-year and three-year terms

Members of the Vancouver Economic Development Commission must have experience or skills that will contribute directly to the economic development goals set by the commission.

Members of the Economic Development Commission must have experience or skills that will contribute directly to the economic development goals set by the Commission.

Duties

The Economic Development Commission has a contractual agreement to provide economic development services to the City of Vancouver as a non-profit society, including:

  • Implementation of a retention and expansion program for existing businesses;
  • Generally working with other organizations to attract new business and investment to the city;
  • Providing advice to the City as requested by City Council as a whole relating to policies and other matters affecting the economic development of the city.

Reappointment

Beginning in 2008, Ordinary Members are appointed by Vancouver City Council for one-year, two-year and three-year terms. In subsequent years, all terms will be 3 years in length. There are no limits on the number of terms a member may serve.

Meetings

The Commission's Board of Directors generally meets from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every second month, at various locations in the City of Vancouver .  The meeting schedule is set on a yearly basis, and is subject to change."   

Please note: Meetings of the Commission are not open to the public.

Time Commitment

In addition to regular Board of Directors meetings, members are expected to participate in at least one of three Standing Committees and an additional ad hoc committee or task group.
