Official results from Vancouver's general local election on November 19, 2005:

Spoiled ballots

This election has generated interest in ballots that are spoiled while voting. When a voter realizes an error has been made while completing their ballot, they may return it to the Presiding Election Officer at the voting place for a replacement ballot. The original ballot is set aside and marked as "spoiled." (A ballot may be considered spoiled when more than the number of candidates to be elected have been selected, a pen mark appears in the oval for a candidate the voter does not wish to vote for, or pen marks appears in the "timing marks" around the sides of the ballot. These errors may be detected by the voter or by the optical reader as it attempts to read the ballot.) No votes are counted on a spoiled ballot, nor are spoiled ballots reflected on the electronic poll by poll results.
