Candidate profiles
Candidates were invited (but were not required) to submit photographs, profile statements and contact information.
The following are the requirements that were given to the candidates:
- Statements must be submitted and published in English only. (Translation can result in subtle differences in the message that the candidate may not have intended. For this reason, only English versions of candidate profiles will be published.)
- Statements must be a maximum of 150 words. Statements in excess of 150 words will be reduced to end at the last complete sentence or phrase within the 150 word limit.
- Statements must be confined to information about the candidate, the elector organization endorsing the candidate or detail about the candidate's independent status, the candidate's policies, and the candidate's intentions if elected.
- The Chief Election Officer will not edit statements, except to reduce the length to below 150 words. Incorrect spelling and grammar, or other obvious errors, will not be corrected.
- Electronic files have to be accompanied by a printed version of the statement signed by the candidate.
- All profiles must be submitted by the close of nominations (October 10, 2008, at 4 pm).
- For candidates who choose not to submit profile information, or who fail to submit appropriate information within the timeline, the candidate name, elector organization (if applicable) and position nominated for, will appear in the candidate profiles with the notation "Candidate profile information not available." Where the profile is complete except for a photo, the notation "Photo not available" will appear in the photo space.
Campaign financing disclosure statements
Every candidate's financial agent must file a campaign financing disclosure statement no more than 120 days after the election (March 16, 2009). If anything changes after the statement is filed, the financial agent must file a supplementary report within 30 days of becoming aware of the change.
Failure to file a complete campaign financing disclosure statement or supplementary report may lead to penalties, up to and including disqualification from holding office until after the next general local election. A campaign financing disclosure statement must be filed even if no campaign contributions were received, and no election expenses were incurred.
Campaign financing disclosure statements will be available for public inspection for seven years after the election.
