One of the primary functions of the City Clerk’s Department is assembling the City of Vancouver Voters List and carrying out municipal elections every 3 years for Mayor and Council, the Park Board, and the School Board. The Department is also responsible for conducting by-elections and plebiscites as required.
In the months leading up to each election or plebiscite, the City Clerk’s Chief Election Officer sets up an election office. The Election Office is responsible for the delivery of all voting day activities including:
- booking the voting places
- recruitment and training of election officials
- preparing and distributing election information materials for voters
- preparing nomination packages for candidates, electoral organizations and campaign organizers
- organizing special voting opportunities
- creating the ballots and maintaining the voting system
- designating the voting divisions and creating the voting divisions map
- creating an outreach team to ensure information on the election is widely distributed
