Library workers ratify agreement with City

The City of Vancouver’s library workers approved a 3-year contract offer on Sunday. Members of CUPE 391 voted 86 per cent in favour of the agreement.

The offer was similar to other settlements reached recently in the Lower Mainland municipalities.

CUPE 391 represents approximately 725 members in the City’s 21 library branches. Employees in this local work in a range of positions from librarians and library assistants, to systems personnel and clerical and administrative staff.

To date, the City has reached agreements with the following unions:

CUPE 1004 represents members who are employed in the areas of sanitation, sewer and water, and those who work as truck drivers and equipment operators. The local also includes a large number of employees in the trade categories (e.g. mechanics, machinists, and gardeners). About 200 CUPE 1004 employees are back at work providing services in key areas such as leaf clearing and garbage and waste collection. The remaining employees are picketed out by members of CUPE 15, who have been on strike since September 27.

IBEW Engineering Operations Branch, representing 76 members who repair traffic signals and street lights, ratified their agreement on October 24. The vote was 80 per cent in favour of the proposal offered by the City. These employees are also picketed out by CUPE 15 members.
