Job Action Closes Many City Services

Strike action by the City’s inside workers has resulted in the cancellation or reduction of many City of Vancouver services.

Until further notice, the following services are not available

· All garbage and recycling services collected by City crews

· Street and lane cleaning

· Street lighting and traffic signal repair

· Sewer and water connections and repairs (except those deemed to be an emergency)

· New building permit applications, building inspections and business licenses

· City of Vancouver Archives.

City services that are available at reduced levels

· The City’s dog pound will continue to provide some services to the public although it may take longer to process requests. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Services such as dog licenses, adoptions, returning dogs to their owners, picking up strays or dead animals, and dealing with dangerous dogs will continue.

· The Mountain View Cemetery will remain open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, there will be no burial or ash internment services available.

· Permit applications. While no new permit applications will be accepted, some limited services will be available for existing applications including: Development Permits; CP Permits; Occupancy for Major Projects; reconnection procedures after gas and power disconnected by City Order; Transfers of Taxi Licenses, and Chauffeur Licenses. Licenses and permits with ‘prior to’ letters may be processed. ‘Letters of permission’ may be substituted for permits and licenses in some areas. Certified professionals’ approvals may substitute for inspections in some instances.

 

City services that will continue

· Police and Fire Services

· Parking meter collection and parking enforcement

· City operated housing lodges and residences

· Health and meal services at the Evelyne Saller Centre

· Community Grant Processing

· Vendor payments, and Accounting services

 

City Hall is open to the public. Access to both City Hall and the East Wing on Yukon Street is through the main City Hall entrance on 12 Avenue at Cambie street.

City Hall hours of operation will be from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, during the strike.

· Residents are encouraged to call City Hall in advance

· Residents are encouraged to pay bills or fines by mail, or through most financial institutions. Parking fines can also be paid over the Internet through the City’s Web site.
