Remembrance Day Ceremonies
The City of Vancouvers 2000 Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held on:
10 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 2000
The Cenotaph at Victory Square
(West Hastings Street, between Cambie and Hamilton streets)
These ceremonies, which include a wreath-laying to honour those who gave their lives, will mark the 82nd anniversary of the First World War Armistice.
The program at the Cenotaph includes:
10:00 a.m.
Musical prelude: Vancouver Bach Youth Choir sings a selection of wartime pieces
10:30 a.m.
Lament: Pipe Major S.K. Morton, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada
Land of Hope and Glory: Vancouver Bach Youth Choir and Vancouver Firefighters Band
Prayer of Remembrance: Major Max Bulmer, Salvaton Army
21-gun Salute: 15 Field Artillery Regiment (to be fired from Crab Park)
The Last Post, The Reveille: Bugle Major John More, BC Regiment
"There are Always Times to Remember": poem read by author and student Lori Lonstein
Weather permitting, there will be a commemorative fly-past by the Recreational Aircraft Association, Western Warbirds, and 407 Maritime Patrol Squadron.
At approximately 11:10 a.m., a parade of veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces will march from the Cenotaph west along Hastings Street. His Worship, Mayor Philip Owen will take the salute from the reviewing stand at Seymour Street. Also attending the ceremonies will be Hedy Fry, MP for Vancouver Centre, Premier Ujjal Dossanjh and Tim Stevenson, MLA for Vancouver-Burrard.
Motorists should be aware that some downtown streets will be closed from 9 a.m. to 12 noon for the ceremonies. These include streets in the area surrounding Victory Square (bounded by Cambie, Pender, Beatty, Georgia and Hamilton streets) and the West Hastings Street parade route (from Cambie to Granville streets).
