City Calls for Book Award Submissions

The City invites publishers and authors to submit entries for the 12th annual City of Vancouver Book Award.

The $2,000 award goes to the author of a book in any genre that demonstrates excellence and contributes to an appreciation and understanding of Vancouver’s history, unique character, or the achievements of its residents. The winning book must also exhibit excellence in content, illustration, design, and/or format.

An independent panel of judges will choose the winner, who will be presented with the award in October by Mayor Philip Owen.

To be eligible, books must be published in 1999 or 2000. All entries must include: three copies of the book, a $15 submission fee (for each title submitted), and a completed entry form.

Entry forms and detailed award guidelines are available from the Office of Cultural Affairs at #100 - 515 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver. They are also available on the City’s Web site at www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/oca.

Submissions should be sent to the Office of Cultural Affairs, City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Y 1V4. Deadline for entries is June 15, 2000.

The short-list of finalists will be announced in early September to coincide with International Literacy Month.

The 1999 City of Vancouver Book Award was presented to Bud Osborn for his volume of poetry Keys to Kingdoms (Get to the Point Publishing). Past winners also include Michael Kluckner for Vanishing Vancouver, Gerald Straley for Trees of Vancouver, Wayson Choy for The Jade Peony, and Rhodri Windsor Liscombe for The New Spirit: Modern Architecture in Vancouver, 1938-1963.
