Backyard Composters Available at One-Day Sale

Do your part for the environment and get a backyard composter at the City’s special one-day sale:

Saturday, May 13, 2000
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At two locations:

  • Arbutus Shopping Centre parking lot
    (Arbutus & Nanton)
  • Champlain Mall parking lot
    (Kerr & 54th Avenue)

A limited number of "Earth Machine" composters will be available to Vancouver residents for $25 (includes taxes), about half the retail cost.

To buy a composter, residents must bring identification proving they live in Vancouver (e.g. driver’s license). Payment is by cash or personal cheque (no credit cards). One composter per customer.

Last year, the City sold 1,200 composters at a similar sale. The composters turn organic waste into a rich soil additive that’s good for lawns and gardens.

The City of Vancouver encourages composting because of its environmental benefits. Composting also saves tax dollars by reducing the cost of municipal collection and disposal. Each Vancouver household produces about one tonne (1,000 kilograms) of waste per year. Backyard composting can divert about one quarter of that waste (250 kilograms) from the landfill. More than 28,000 composters have been sold since the start of the City’s Compost Bin Distribution Program in 1990. These composters divert about 6,700 tonnes (6.7 million kilograms) from the landfill every year.
