[News Release Index]City services to resume over the next few days:
CUPE 15 employees ratify contractStriking CUPE 15 employees voted in favour of a contract offer tonight that will enable the City of Vancouver to resume services over the next few days.
"It will take a few days to get all services up to speed again," said Judy Rogers, city manager. "We ask for the publics patience as we begin to restore the many services that were affected by the strike."
Here is a list of some key services and plans for when they will be restored.
Garbage and recycling collection:
Residential garbage collection, which began on Monday, will continue on Thursday morning in the blue zone (i.e., according to the 2000 Pick-up Schedule). There will still be a 6-can limit and only garbage will be collected. There will be no recycling collection on Thursday.
On Friday, November 17, collection will continue in the green zone, and will include recycling pick-up.
In terms of recycling, residents will be limited to one blue box, one blue bag and one yellow bag per residence during the first week of collection. All remaining recyclable material will be collected the following week.
Effective Thursday morning, the Citys transfer station will resume normal operations (open 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.), as will the Vancouver Landfill (open 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.).
The Citys yard trimmings collection program will begin within a week or two, once City crews clear the backlog of garbage and recycling materials. Information on the yard trimmings collection program will be provided to the media at a later date.
Parks and Recreation:
Community centres and fitness centres will be open for the public on Friday, November 17. Programs in the centres will resume as soon as possible.
Civic golf courses and rinks will be open to the public on Saturday, November 18.
Updates on other Parks Board activities will be provided to the media on Thursday, November 16.
Permitting, licensing and inspections:
Services such as applications for new permits, licenses, re-zoning, and inspections will not resume until Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. The public is advised not to come to City Hall on Thursday, as the counters for these services will be closed to the public. In order to avoid long line-ups on Friday, the City suggests new applicants arrange to come to City Hall next week.
