Fire Protection System Demo May 6

The City will hold a demonstration and training exercise for its Dedicated Fire Protection System this weekend on Bute Street in Vancouver’s West End. The exercise is planned for:

        Saturday May 6, 2000 1:30-2:30 p.m.
        Bute Street to Beach Avenue

Staff from Fire and Rescue Services and Engineering will run large-diameter hose along Bute from Burnaby Avenue to Beach Avenue. This hose will feed high-pressure water to a fire truck located near the Sunset Beach concession. This fire truck’s water cannon will then spray water into False Creek.

Bute Street will be restricted to local traffic for the duration of the exercise. Hose ramps will allow vehicles to drive over the hose on Pacific and Beach Avenues.

This event replaces a demonstration that was scheduled for May 6 at 2 p.m. in Coal Harbour.

The City’s Dedicated Fire Protection System (DFPS) is a $48 million project. When complete, the DFPS will provide high-pressure water to fight fires in the downtown area and Kitsilano in the event of a major earthquake or other disaster. The system has the capability to pump saltwater from the ocean. Under normal conditions, the system’s two pump stations and 13 km of earthquake-resistant pipeline will enhance existing fire protection capabilities.
