City Book Award Finalists to Read from Nominated Works
The finalists for the City of Vancouver Book Award will present excerpts from their nominated works in an evening of readings on:

Christine Allen and Collin Varner for Gardens of Vancouver (Raincoast Books), an in-depth tour of 26 of Vancouvers finest private gardens, that includes an essay on the origins of gardening in the city.
Lilia DAcres and Donald Luxton for Lions Gate (Talonbooks), a fascinating look at the complicated and sometimes mysterious past of the Lions Gate Bridge.
Wayson Choy for Paper Shadows: A Chinatown Childhood (Penguin Canada), a chronicle of his life growing up in Vancouvers Chinatown.
Wing Chung Ng for The Chinese in Vancouver: The Pursuit of Identity and Power, 1945-80 (UBC Press), a historical look at the cultural identity struggle of Chinese immigrants and their Canadian-born descendants in Vancouver.
Since 1989, the City has presented this $2,000 book award annually to authors of books in any genre that demonstrate excellence and contribute to an appreciation and understanding of Vancouvers history, unique character or the achievements of its residents.
The finalists and winner are decided by an independent panel of judges. Mayor Philip Owen will present the award in Council Chamber on October 17.
