Ways to reduce garbage impacts during job action
Due to job action by civic workers, residential garbage collection, recycling services and yard trimmings collection, as well as garbage collection from public litter containers, is unavailable.
There are a number of things residents can do to deal with their garbage until collection resumes.
Garbage should be reduced, reused or recycled as much as possible.
Recyclable materials such as paper, cans, and bottles should be separated, cleaned and stored for later pick-up
Cans should be crushed to minimize their size
Other disposable items such as plastic or styrofoam cups should be reused
Dry garbage should be double bagged and stored in a cool, dry place (such as a basement or garage). Wet kitchen garbage should be placed in rodent-resistant composters or containers.
Leaves and other yard trimmings should be bagged for later pick-up. To avoid plugging street drains and causing flooding, leaves should not be raked into street gutters.
Do not put garbage in lanes, on streets or in other public places. Store in a cool place for later pick-up.
Residents are advised to avoid using public litter containers. Instead, they are requested to take their litter home for disposal.
Merchants should continue to clean sidewalks in front of their businesses, and bag garbage for later pick-up.
garbage collection service for commercial properties and apartment buildings are not directly affected by this strike. In addition, apartment recycling for most of Downtown, Kitsilano, Fairview Slopes and the Downtown Eastside is expected to continue.Note:
