Vancouver’s Newest Outdoor Public Space Opens

Mayor Philip Owen will officially open Granville Loop Plaza, Vancouver’s newest outdoor public space on:

Wednesday, May 3, 2000
11 a.m.
Granville and West 5th Avenue
At water feature northeast corner of plaza

Granville Loop Plaza features: improved bus connections, new transit shelters and waiting areas; better pedestrian connections to and from False Creek and Granville Island; a children’s play area; tennis courts, benches, arbours, and a water feature.

The plaza was initially made possible through the cooperation between the City of Vancouver and the Bosa Development Corporation. When Bosa Development took on the project of developing the Pacific Press site, the development cost levies generated helped fund the creation of the $2.6 million plaza. Many other private companies and City departments also lent their time and efforts to this project.

Construction on the plaza began in September 1998 after public consultation. Existing bridge on-ramps were removed, a new section of 5th Avenue was created between Hemlock and Granville Streets, transit poles were relocated, and the east pedestrian tunnel entrance was re-aligned.

These adjustments along with the addition of the various public amenities give everyone a more convenient, attractive place to make transit connections, and a new recreation area.
