Some City services to resume

The City of Vancouver and CUPE Local 1004 reached an agreement that will restore some specific services to the public.

The agreement, which was approved by the Labour Relations Board, allows the City to resume some key services such as leaf clean-up and residential waste and garbage collection.

Leaves that have accumulated and clogged street gutters and drains pose a flood risk, that could result in personal and property damage. Wet, slippery compacted leaves also create a hazard for motorists and pedestrians. Every year, the City clears 6000 tonnes of leaves in an eight-week period.

Growing concerns surrounding sanitation issues prompted the resumption of residential waste and garbage collection in Vancouver. Residential garbage has been accumulating for more than a month.

In order to provide these services, approximately 200 workers of the 1,700 CUPE Local 1004 employees will resume work this week in these key areas.

Leaf clearing will commence on Wednesday. Residential waste and garbage collection will resume in the next few days. Further information about the schedule for waste and garbage collection will be available shortly, and will be posted on the City’s web site (www.city.vancouver.bc.ca).
