City Installs Spare Change Meters

The City of Vancouver and the Rotary Club of Vancouver, Arbutus are collaborating on a pilot project to install 10 spare change meters on a trial basis in various locations in Vancouver.

Spare change meters are recycled parking meters that have been placed at strategic locations in the city. Rather than offering parking, they offer residents and visitors an effective alternative to giving money to panhandlers. All money collected from the meters over the one-year trial period will be donated to charities helping street people.

The spare change meters are painted a distinctive bright yellow, and are placed at the following locations:

• Seymour Street near BCIT

• Granville Mall near the Bay SkyTrain station exit

• Granville Mall in Theatre Row

• Burrard Street at the Burrard SkyTrain exit

• Cordova outside the old CP station

• West Broadway near London Drugs

• Robson and Burrard

• three locations yet to be determined.

The spare change meters were donated by Trafco Canada. The City will pay the installation and maintenance costs of $1,200 for the one-year trial. The meter locations were approved with the input of nearby businesses and the Downtown Business Improvement Association.
