Council Decides on Question for Olympic Vote

City Council today confirmed the question for the February 22 vote on Vancouver’s participation in hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games.

Here is the exact question that will be on the ballot:

“Do you support or do you oppose the City of Vancouver’s participation in hosting the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games?
_____ YES, I support the City of Vancouver’s participation.
_____ NO, I oppose the City of Vancouver’s participation.”

The vote will be held Saturday, February 22, 2003. To be eligible to vote, you must:
· be a Canadian citizen
· be 18 years of age or older on general voting day (February 22, 2003)
· have lived in B.C. for at least six months on the day you vote
· have lived in Vancouver for at least 30 days on the day you vote
· are not disqualified by law from voting.

The City will not use a Voters List for the Olympic vote. Eligible voters must register at the voting place on February 22. They can do this by showing two pieces of identification (one with a signature on it) and completing and signing an application form. For more details on acceptable ID, go to: www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/voteID

There will be 20-40 voting places spread across the city, and voters can vote at any one of these locations. Voters will not receive a “Where To Vote” card, as they did in the recent civic election. However, background information and voting locations will be widely publicized.

For those unable to vote on February 22, 2003, there will be advance voting opportunities held at City Hall on February 12 and 18, 2003.
