September 9, 2003City of Vancouver names Marion Lay and Judy Rogers to board of Organizing Committee for 2010 Olympic GamesThe City of Vancouver today named former Olympic swimmer Marion Lay and City Manager Judy Rogers as its representatives to the board of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG). OCOG will be responsible for all aspects of planning and organizing the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. "Vancouver could not have two better people to represent Council and the citizens on this board," said Mayor Larry Campbell. "Both had the unanimous support of Council. Judy Rogers has been deeply involved in the city's bid for many years. "Marion Lay has been part of the Vancouver 2010 bid from its earliest stages. She has led the way with the "Legacies Now" program to ensure a direct benefit from the Games to communities right across the province. A former Olympic athlete herself, she understands how the Games can help communities and amateur sport." Vancouver is entitled to two members of the 20-person board, which also includes seven nominees from the Canadian Olympic Committee, three federal representatives, three provincial representatives, two representatives from Whistler, one representative from the Canadian Paralympic Committee, one member appointed by the Lil'Wat and Squamish First Nations, and one member to be appointed by the other 19 OCOG members. Meanwhile, Mayor Campbell will refer the report resulting from the "Mayor's Forums," held during the referendum on Vancouver's participation in the Games, to Rogers for implementation. "We have made important commitments to the IOC and to the people of the city, and we must deliver on them," Campbell said. "We have asked the City Manager to review my report and bring back recommendations to Council for consideration." The report proposed a wide range of measures to protect neighbourhoods from negative impacts and to ensure legacies from the Games for amateur sports and the arts community.
