Local books tie for City of Vancouver Book Award
Two books that document aspects of Vancouver life through photographs and essays
have been named the co-winners of the 2003 City of Vancouver Book Award.
Heroines (Anvil Press) with photographs by Lincoln Clarkes and essays by Ken
Dietrich-Campbell, Patricia Canning and Elaine Allan, and Stan Douglas:
Every Building on 100 West Hastings (Contemporary Art Gallery/Arsenal Pulp Press),
edited by Reid Shier with essays by Christina Ritchie, Jeff Sommers, Nick Blomley,
Neil Smith, Jeff Derksen and Denise Blake Oleksijczuk, tied for the prize,
which is presented annually to authors of books in any genre that demonstrate
excellence and illuminate Vancouver’s history, unique character or the
achievements of its residents.
Mayor Larry Campbell presented Lincoln Clarkes and Reid Shier with the $2,000
award, which they will split, during a Vancouver City Council meeting today.
“
This marks the first time in the history of the City of Vancouver Book Award
that we have had a tie. Each book presents through photographs and essays an
unforgettable portrait of our city,” Campbell said. “The jury commented
that it was extraordinary that two such visionary books would come out in the
same year.”
Heroines is a collection of haunting portraits of the lives of the marginalized
women in the Downtown Eastside, with images that are already indelible in the
collective memory of Vancouverites.
Stan Douglas: Every Building on 100 West Hastings is based on artist Stan Douglas’ monumental
photo mural of the south side of 100 West Hastings Street. The essays crystallize
the history and the challenges of one of the most controversial neighbourhoods
in the city.
The two winning books were selected by an independent jury. The three judges
were writer George Fetherling, librarian Anne Yandle and bookseller Michael
Varty. The other finalists for the award were Vancouver, City on the
Edge by John Clague and Bob Turner (Tricouni Press) and Intimate
Distances by
Fiona
Tinwei Lam (Nightwood Editions/Harbour Publishing).
