Council Appoints New Child and Youth Advocate

Mayor Larry Campbell today announced the appointment of Sheila Davidson as the City of Vancouver's new Child and Youth Advocate.

Davidson begins a three-year term as Advocate on May 10, 2004. She will report directly to City Council and will make recommendations on policies and issues affecting young people up to the age of 24. She will also work with civic departments to ensure young peoples' interests are taken into account, and that City services and facilities are of high quality and accessible to all young people.

Mayor Campbell said, "Sheila Davidson is an excellent choice for this position. She has the experience to work with the community at every level, to ensure that a wide range of children and youth voices are heard and included in the City's decision-making processes."

Davidson has been Executive Director of the SFU Childcare Society for 12 years. An active member of the Child Care Advocacy Forum, and past Chair of the Provincial Child Care Council, she has taken lead roles on several childcare committees involving municipal, provincial and federal government representatives.

The position of Child and Youth Advocate was first established in 1989, and was discontinued in 1999 after an internal review. The present City Council re-instated the position in 2003 to strengthen support of the City's Civic Youth Strategy and to enhance community advocacy for very young children and youth.
