City narrows down ideas for Hastings Park/PNE, seeks public feedback

The City of Vancouver is seeking public feedback on four shortlisted approaches that outline possible concepts to guide the future development of Hastings Park and the PNE.

The approaches are conceptual plans (not designs) that envision different options for the future of the site. They can be viewed online at www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/pnepark

Public feedback is an integral part of the consultation process, and the City encourages everyone to review the four approaches and submit their feedback via an online questionnaire at www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/pnepark. The deadline for feedback is May 5.

In addition to the questionnaire, a citywide random public survey is also being conducted. Results from the questionnaire and random public survey will be reported to the Vancouver Park Board on May 17 and City Council on May 18.

The approaches build upon the 1997 Hastings Park Restoration Plan, which planned for a phased greening of the site.

The public consultation process began in February with an open-house Ideas Fair at the Agrodome, which attracted 1,200 visitors and generated 52 “concept-drawings” and 800 feedback forms. The wealth of information created during the Ideas Fair was summarized and put on display for further public input at information kiosks located around the city in March.

Along the way, City staff have also been consulting a group of key stakeholders for their input. Feedback from the public and key stakeholders was reviewed by technical consultants and compiled into the four approaches. Once an approach is adopted by City Council, the detailed design of the park and of a summer fair will begin.

In 2003, Hastings Entertainment and the BC Lottery Corporation applied to City Council to have slot machines installed at Hastings Racecourse. The City has been collecting feedback on this topic during the Hastings Park/PNE public consultation process and conducting a technical review of the approaches. Information collected during this process will provide context for City Council to consider the slots application through a separate rezoning process.
