Vancouver and Torino sign Convention of Co-operation
The City of Vancouver and the City of Torino, Italy have signed a Convention
of Co-operation, an official pact that will see the two cities sharing
social, cultural and economic knowledge and experiences.
Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell and Torino Mayor Sergio Chiamparino
signed the convention on behalf of their cities this morning at a
Board of Trade
event.
A delegation of officials from Torino has been visiting Vancouver this
week to exchange ideas and information from their planning of the 2006
Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The Convention recognizes that Vancouver, the 2010 host of the Olympic
and Paralympic Winter Games, and Torino, the 2006 host, have an important
common challenge – creating a lasting, sustainable legacy of the
events for their citizens, future generations and the overall community.
The Convention of Co-operation includes agreements to:
•
keep each other informed of economic, social and cultural affairs, projects
and important events;
•
learn from each other through the exchange of experiences in fields such
as economic and business development, education, science and technology,
culture and leisure, tourism, and urban planning;
•
provide information and support for business and investment opportunities,
and to identify economic sectors where both cities have an advantage
over other cities, and look into how business cooperation could be mutually
beneficial.
"This agreement gives us a great opportunity to learn how Torino
is using the 2006 Olympic Winter Games to improve the social, cultural
and economic life of their city. Both our cities will benefit from this
partnership," said Mayor Larry Campbell.
The ultimate objective of both cities is improving the quality of life
of their citizens through sustainable development. The Convention of
Co-operation will remain in effect until 2010.
