November 4, 2004City's National Works Yard Wins Steel Design AwardThe City of Vancouver's National Works Yard has been awarded the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) 2004 BC Steel Design Award in the Architectural Division for outstanding steel structure. With imagery drawn from the historical industrial and railway uses previously located on the site, this project demonstrates both the structural and architectural abilities of steel. The structure of the building is a composition of tilt-up concrete, structural steel and engineered wood. Large steel 'V's are reminiscent of train trestles and act as eccentric-braced frames to provide lateral stability to the building against earthquakes. Canopies at the entryways of the Administration and Parking Operations buildings repeat the theme and provide structural expression. The five hectare works yard located on National Avenue is the City of Vancouver's new engineering operations centre, replacing the old Cambie Works Yard. The new yard incorporates the operations of eight City branches along with associated administrative support for the facility. The project is the City's pilot initiative to promote sustainable design practices, with the Administrative Centre and Parking Operations Building receiving LEED(r) Gold Certification from the Canada Green Building Council. Omicron Architecture Engineering Construction Services Ltd. provided integrated design and construction services to the City of Vancouver for the development of the $23 million facility. The Architect of Record for the project is Scott M. Kemp with Ed Davis, Rod Yeoh and Ivan Lee leading the project as Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers of Record, respectively. Omicron's Tim Loo coordinated all construction services as Construction Manager, with Peter Bremner as the Project Manager for the City of Vancouver. Solid Rock Steel was commissioned to fabricate the structural steel for the Administration Centre, Parking Operations Building and Fuelling Station. The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) is the national industry organization representing the structural steel, open web steel joist and steel plate-work fabricating industries. Formed in 1930, CISC was granted a Federal Charter as a non-profit industry association in 1942. CISC operates as a technical, marketing and government relations organization. For more information: |
