City to award studio space to local artistsThe City of Vancouver invites Vancouver-based low-income professional artists to apply for rent-free or subsidized live/work space through the City of Vancouver Artist Studio program for 2005-2008. There are two opportunities available for a non-renewable three-year term. The City of Vancouver Artist Residency Award provides a rent-free artist live/work studio at Scotia Street and East 4th Avenue for a non-renewable three-year term beginning September 1, 2005. The Artist Studio Rental Opportunity provides an artist live/work studio at Cambie Street and West 8th Avenue at the GAIN (Guaranteed Annual Income for Need) maximum shelter allowance (currently $325 per month for singles) for a non-renewable three-year term beginning September 1, 2005. Vancouver-based professional artists who can demonstrate artistic excellence and financial need are eligible to apply. Because the studios are located in industrial zones, priority will be given to artists whose work involves the use of hazardous materials and processes. Both awards will be decided by an independent jury of local art professionals, which will be coordinated by the Contemporary Art Gallery. “This program was created by City Council to recognize the tremendous contribution Vancouver artists make in our community”, says Mayor Larry Campbell. “It supports professional artists by providing an extended term to concentrate on their creative process. We’re proud of the program and the past award recipients, and we are committed to continue to seek new and innovative ways to support artists in our growing city.” The 2002-2005 winner of the City of Vancouver Artist Residency Award was multimedia artist Myfanwy MacLeod who moves on to the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Programme in Scotland. Alex Morrison, whose work uses a variety of approaches and media including “memory” drawings, video loops, and colour photography, was the recipient of the 2002-2005 Artist Studio Rental Opportunity. The deadline for applications is Monday, May 16, 2005. The winners will be announced in June. Application forms, FAQs, and eligibility criteria are available online at vancouver.ca/studioawards or by contacting: Office of Cultural Affairs, Phone: 604.871.6434; e-mail: oca@vancouver.ca.
