October 19, 2005Elegant and accessible history of Vancouver wins City of Vancouver Book AwardWriter Lance Berelowitz was awarded the $2,000 City of Vancouver Book Award today for Dream City: Vancouver and the Global Imagination (Douglas & McIntyre), a passionate yet authoritative history of Vancouver's unique cityscape. An independent jury found Berelowitz's book to be an elegant and accessible investigation into our city's character, urban planning, architecture, public spaces, and landscapes. The judges felt the book is grounded with the science of an academic text, but still remains a pleasurable and persuasive read. Its alluring design also enhanced its subject -- the city of dreams. Councillor Ellen Woodsworth, acting as Deputy Mayor, presented the award to Berelowitz at the opening reception of the Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival. Berelowitz is an urban planning consultant, professor, and principal of Urban Forum Associates. He is a former chair of the Vancouver City Planning Commission and the editor-in-chief of Vancouver's 2010 Olympic Winter Games Bid Book submission. A 20-year resident of Vancouver, his roots are in Cape Town, South Africa. The City of Vancouver Book Award is presented annually to authors of books in any genre that demonstrate excellence and enhance our understanding of Vancouver's rich history and culture. The independent jury who selected the finalists included: Keith Bunnell, University of B.C. librarian; Laurie Roggeman, former president of the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library; and author and cultural advocate Max Wyman. The other finalists for this year's award were: Wayson Choy for All That Matters (Doubleday Canada); Leslie Robertson and Dara Culhane (editors) for In Plain Sight: Reflections on Life in Downtown Eastside Vancouver (Talonbooks); and various authors for The Vancouver Stories: West Coast Fiction from Canada's Best Writers (Raincoast Books).
