October 7, 2005Dal Richards nominated to receive Freedom of the City awardDal Richards has been nominated to receive a Freedom of City award, the highest honour the City of Vancouver can bestow. This award is reserved for people of exceedingly high merit and requires unanimous support from Council. For over 60 years, Richards has delighted audiences with his memorable dance music. A Vancouver native, his band played at the Hotel Vancouver's Panorama Roof five nights a week for over 25 years, the longest running dance band engagement in Canadian history, and was featured in over 2,000 coast-to-coast CBC Radio broadcasts. Dal Richards has performed at the PNE for 65 summers. "Dal represents all that is great about Vancouver," said Mayor Larry Campbell, who nominated Richards to receive the award. Richards, who was awarded the City's Civic Merit award in 1994, is an active volunteer with the Variety Club, the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame and Vancouver AM Tourist Services. He has received many honours during his career as a musician, including Variety International's Presidential Citation in 1993, the Order of Canada in 1995, an honourary doctorate from BCIT in 1999 and one from the Open Learning Agency in 2001, and the Order of British Columbia in 2003. The City of Vancouver began recognizing individuals with the Freedom of the City Award in 1936. Recipients of the award are recognized during a special ceremony at Council, which consists of the reading and presentation of a framed scroll, the Freedom Medal and a decal that permits free parking at City parking meters.
