Traffic restrictions in effect for Celebration of Light

Traffic restrictions will be in effect on the evenings of July 27 and 30, and August 3 and 6, 2005 for the HSBC Celebration of Light fireworks competition in English Bay.

On these evenings, vehicle access in the West End and Kits Point will be limited to residents who can prove residency through car registration or a resident permit parking decal. Emergency vehicles, buses, taxis and valid delivery trucks will also be allowed access. All others will not be allowed vehicle access into these two areas (see map).

Vehicle access to the West End will be restricted from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on each of the four evenings. Residential traffic access to the West End will be at Nelson and Thurlow, Davie and Thurlow, Burnaby and Thurlow, and at Nicola and Robson streets. For residents west of Denman, access is available on Robson west of Denman.

Kits Point vehicle access will be restricted from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on each of the four evenings. Residential and commercial traffic should use Maple Street northbound to cross Cornwall to access Kits Point on event nights. No access will be permitted from Cornwall. Vehicles towing boats will not be permitted into Kits Point after trailer parking locations have filled at the Vanier Park boat launch.

Wheelchair-accessible parking is available prior to 6 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis at:
  • Bidwell and Burnaby
  • Beach Avenue, across from lawn bowling
  • Parks Board Administration Office
  • parking lot at Arbutus and McNicholl.

Motorists must not stop on any City bridge to view the fireworks. Members of the public are encouraged to use public transit where possible, or parking lots in the downtown area. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light-coloured clothing; cyclists should be equipped for night-time riding; and boaters must have appropriate night-time running lights.
