City appoints Project Manager for Southeast False Creek

The City of Vancouver announced today it has appointed Jody Andrews as Project Manager for Southeast False Creek.

Andrews will oversee the development of Southeast False Creek - a major initiative encompassing 50 acres of City-owned property. The vision for this last major track of waterfront development in Vancouver is to create a model, sustainable mixed-use community. One area of the land will also serve as the Athletes’ Village for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Andrews is a professional engineer who has worked with the City for 15 years, most recently as Assistant City Engineer, Departmental Services – the division responsible for overseeing the Engineering department’s $200 million capital and operating budgets.

He has a long history of working on sustainable community projects, and managing large projects to successful completion. During his career, Andrews assisted in negotiating and coordinating the design of public amenities for the Coal Harbour and Bayshore Gardens waterfront developments. He also played a leadership role in creating Vancouver’s Blue Box Recycling Program; “greening” the City’s fleet of vehicles; mitigating impacts of traffic in neighbourhoods, and building Vancouver’s bicycle network. He also managed the City's National Works Yard -- a leading edge, sustainable “green” building that recently was awarded Gold LEED certification.

Andrews also spent about two years as the Assistant Director of Engineering for the City of New Westminster where, among other projects, he served as the Chief Negotiator for that city’s SkyTrain Millennium Line, which included construction of a waterfront park along the Fraser River.

“Southeast False Creek has the potential of showing the world how effectively sustainability can be worked into every aspect of a community,” said Judy Rogers, City Manager. “Andrews’ proven commitment to sustainability and extensive experience working with communities, developers and planners make him an excellent choice to take the helm of this important project for Vancouver.”

Vancouver City Council is in the process of holding public hearings to establish an Official Development Plan (ODP) for Southeast False Creek. The next public meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 14, 7:30 p.m. in Council Chamber, City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue.
