Vancouver artists awarded studio live/work space through City program

A photographer/video artist and a sculptor are the 2005-2008 recipients of the City of Vancouver Artist Studio Program awards, which gives local artists the use of a City live/work space where they can develop their art. The two studios were secured by the City, at no cost to the taxpayers, through the City’s innovative zoning incentive programs.

The City of Vancouver Artist Residency Award went to Kevin Schmidt. The award grants occupancy of an artist live/work studio rent-free for three years starting September 1, 2005.

The City of Vancouver Artist Rental Studio was awarded to Rhonda Weppler. It provides occupancy of an artist live/work studio at the GAIN maximum shelter allowance (currently $325 per month for singles) for three years starting September 1, 2005.

“ This program was created by City Council to recognize the tremendous contribution Vancouver artists make in our community.” says Mayor Larry Campbell. “It supports professional artists by providing an extended term to concentrate on their creative process. We’re proud of the program of the past award recipients and we are committed to continue to seek new and innovative ways to support artists in our growing city.”

Kevin Schmidt completed a BFA at Emily Carr in 1997. His work largely deals with cultural interpretations of landscape. In 2002, his DVD Long Beach Led Zep debuted and continues to be shown across Canada and internationally. It is also part of National Gallery of Canada’s collection. His latest work, Fog, has been shown in North Vancouver and Toronto.

Rhonda Weppler earned her MFA in Sculpture from UBC in 1998. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across Canada and internationally. Working in a variety of sculptural media, her works play with the discontinuities between reality and representation. Her recent collaboration with Trevor Mahovsky was shown last year in Vancouver, Ottawa, Madrid and Berlin.

The recipients were chosen by an independent panel through an open, competitive process jointly administered by the City and the Contemporary Art Gallery. Applicants were pre-qualified by the City’s Housing Centre based on financial need, and then reviewed by a panel for artistic excellence.
