City of Vancouver News Release

November 3, 2005

ID required to register for Election 2005

The City reminds all Vancouver residents who are not yet registered to vote in the upcoming election that, to register, you must present two pieces of identification at the voting place (according to Section 30(2) of the Vancouver Charter).

Having the correct ID will speed the voting process. One of the two pieces of ID must have your signature, and one piece of ID should show your current address.

Here are the kinds of ID that are acceptable:

  • B.C. Driver's Licence
  • B.C. ID card from Motor Vehicle Branch
  • ICBC Owner's Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence
  • B.C. Care Card
  • Social Insurance card
  • Citizenship Card
  • property tax notice
  • credit card or debit card
  • utility bill for electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable services
  • welfare cheque stub showing name and ID number
  • statutory declaration or sworn affidavit (from a notary public, lawyer, or commissioner for taking oaths).

If you have minimal ID, or no ID showing your address, you will be asked to take a "Declaration of Voter Identity and Residency" at the voting place.

Voters can also register to vote at one of the advance voting opportunities on November 5, 9, 15 and 16 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) at City Hall, and Dunbar, Trout Lake and West End Community Centres.

For specific questions on voter registration, or general information about the election, visit the City's website at vancouver.ca/vote or call the Vancouver Election Office at 604.873.7681.
