Voting tips for November 19

The City of Vancouver is expecting significant voter turn-out on election day, which is Saturday November 19, 2005.

Advance polls indicate strong interest. A total of 8,778 people voted in advance polls in 2005, compared to 6,306 people who voted in 2002 and 2,945 in 1999. For Election 2005, the City provided 16 advance voting opportunities, and only eight in 2002.

Based on this turn-out, the number of voters on election day may also be significant.

Vancouver polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on November 19 and there are 135 voting places spread across the city.

Here are some things voters can do to speed up the voting process:

If you are already registered:
You should have received a "Where to Vote" card from the Vancouver Election Office in the mail. You must vote at the voting place shown on the card. Bring the card with you to your voting place.

If you are registering on voting day:
Bring two pieces of identification with you. One piece of ID must have your signature.
A list of acceptable kinds of ID is available online at vancouver.ca/vote
Be prepared to line up to register at your voting place. If you have minimal ID you may take a "Declaration of Identity and Residency" at the voting place.

If you don't know your voting place:
Go to the City's website and use the voting place search tool at vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/election2005/wheredoivote.htm

or call the Vancouver Election Office at 604.873.7681.
