City detours bikeway in Southeast False Creek

Starting today, the City of Vancouver will re-route the section of the Seaside Greenway/Bikeway that runs along the south shore of False Creek from Ontario Street to Columbia Street.

The bikeway will now follow a U-shaped detour south from the shoreline and around the heritage Salt Building at 85 West First Avenue. It will proceed west from Science World, follow Ontario Street to First Avenue, and continue along First Avenue to Columbia Street, where it will rejoin the existing greenway/bikeway.

This detour is necessary as work begins on the site for the Southeast False Creek and Olympic Village development.

First steps will include the removal of old decking and piles located northwest of the Salt Building, soil clean-up, and preparation of the site for construction. The heavy machinery required for this work would pose a danger to pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction of the roads, underground utilities and waterfront, including a new greenway/bikeway from Ontario to Columbia, is scheduled to begin in early 2006. Following this, construction of the building sites will begin and continue until just before the Olympic Games in February 2010.

This detour may be in place throughout the construction of the Southeast False Creek and Olympic Village development.  However, efforts will be made to open a waterfront greenway/bikeway earlier if possible.
