Own a piece of Vancouver history: Bricks from
Woodward's building going on sale September 17
Bricks from the historic Woodward's department store in downtown Vancouver will be going on sale September 17 to help support BladeRunners, a special program that offers employment and training opportunities for homeless youth.
Members of the media are invited to the "Bricks for BladeRunners" launch at the Woodward's construction site on:
Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at 8:45 am
150 West Cordova Street
Mayor Sam Sullivan will kick off the sale with the purchase of the first brick. Other dignitaries and corporate sponsors will also be attending. The general public is invited to purchase "Bricks for BladeRunners" on:
Sunday, September 17, 2006 (10 am to 2 pm)
150 West Cordova Street
Pricing for the bricks is inspired by the popular Woodward's "$1.49 Day" sales. Bricks cost $1.49 for Downtown Eastside residents and $14.99 for the general public. Corporate sponsors can purchase bricks with a minimum donation of $500. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued with all bricks, and corporate donations are eligible for tax receipts.
Proceeds from the sale will go towards BladeRunners, an award-winning Province of British Columbia employment program that helps disadvantaged youth build careers in construction and trades. The sale is being coordinated through a special partnership between the Aboriginal Community Careers Services Society (ACCESS), a program that provides training and employment opportunities for Urban Aboriginal people in Greater Vancouver, the W Redevelopment Group, site construction manager ITC, and the City of Vancouver.
Established in 1903, the landmark Woodward's department store anchored the corner of Hastings and Abbott for 90 years until it closed in 1993. After sitting vacant for over a decade, the building was purchased by the City of Vancouver and is now being redeveloped as part of a Downtown Eastside revitalization project.
The original 1903 corner facade of Woodward's is being restored as part of the new development. The bricks donated by W Redevelopment Group for the "Bricks for BladeRunners" sale originate from the other parts of the site.
