Vancouver’s Myfanwy MacLeod wins art commission for OIympic Village Plaza
Vancouver artist Myfanwy MacLeod has won a juried international competition conducted by the City of Vancouver to create Vancouver’s first Olympic and Paralympic legacy art commission for the main plaza within the Olympic Village in Southeast False Creek.
The artwork - the first element identified as part of the City of Vancouver’s Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Plan – will serve as a prominent work for this new neighbourhood and as a legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Myfanwy MacLeod received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1994. MacLeod, a recipient of a VIVA (Vancouver Institute of Visual Arts) Award in 1999, has exhibited her work both in Canada and internationally, and represented Canada at the Melbourne Biennale in Australia. Upcoming exhibitions include a group show at the National Gallery of Canada and a solo show at the Catriona Jeffries Gallery in 2009.
The first buildings in the new Southeast False Creek community will serve as the athletes’ village for the 2010 Winter Games, and will host approximately 2,800 athletes and officials. MacLeod’s work will be installed in the Olympic Village Plaza prior to the 2010 Winter Games.
The City of Vancouver is also in the process of selecting artists for a public art commission at the west end of Georgia Street, at the entrance to Stanley Park. This commission is an opportunity to provide Vancouver with a signature artwork at a spectacular Vancouver site and will form another part of the legacy program. Expressions of interest from artists will be accepted until November 17, 2008.
On September 30, 2008, Vancouver City Council approved a comprehensive Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Plan in which the City will commission new artworks that reveal, surprise, challenge and celebrate Vancouver and the intent and spirit of the Olympic movement. The plan includes a range of public art projects from large-scale, site-specific legacy projects to temporary celebratory projects.
