Coast Salish public art work unveiled
in Stanley Park
Three intricately carved gateway sculptures by renown Coast Salish artist
Susan Point will be unveiled at the Brockton Point totem area in Stanley
Park:
Monday, June 9, 2008
10:30 am to 12 noon
Stanley Park, Brockton Point totem site
(Free parking is available at marked lots near the site
between 10 am and 1 pm. A shuttle bus will circulate between lots and
the event site 30 minutes before and after the event.)
The three portals, entitled People Amongst the People, represent the
house-post structure that is traditional to Coast Salish culture, and
are intended as a gesture of welcome by the Coast Salish peoples to visitors
of Stanley Park.
Susan Point will be present for the official unveiling of this major
work in one of the most visited areas of Stanley Park. She will be joined
by Deputy Mayor Suzanne Anton, Park Board Chair Korina Houghton, Elder
Larry Grant, Squamish Nation Chief Bill Williams, Musqueam Nation Chief
Ernest Campbell, Councillor Carleen Thomas of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation,
and members of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Watuth First Nations.
People Amongst the People is an initiative of the City of Vancouver’s
Public Art Program in collaboration with Coast Salish Arts; Vancouver
Storyscapes, a City Social Planning project that encouraged aboriginal
people to share their stories through a variety of media; the Musqueam,
Squamish, and Tsleil-Watuth First Nations, and the Vancouver Board of
Parks and Recreation.
