Equal Employment Opportunity Policy

The City of Vancouver is made up of many racial and cultural components, each contributing uniquely to the community as a whole. In recognition of this, and of the dignity and worth of every person, City Council reaffirms its commitment to a policy of equal employment opportunity for visible minorities, women, aboriginal peoples and people with disabilities.

The aim of this policy is to create a workforce which reflects the composition of the qualified labour pool available in the community, and to foster a climate of understanding and mutual respect among employees in the workplace and in the community at large.

To this end, Council has expanded the City’s Equal Employment Opportunity Program and directed the City Manager to ensure its effective implementation. City Council requires that civic employees comply with the program in carrying out their duties in order to achieve representative hiring and promotion within the provisions of Council resolutions and the Collective Agreements, and in order to achieve a work environment free of harassment arising from an individual’s gender, racial/ethnic origin, or disability.

Council believes that both this policy and the operation of an Equal Employment Opportunity program support the efficient and effective functioning of the City administration and are consistent with the policy of selecting the most meritorious applicants for City positions.
