Proposed New Metered Areas
Parking meters are being proposed for areas where there is an observed, measured and high-demand for parking and where commercial/retail customers will benefit from finding a place to park. Parking meters help to open up spaces and reduce the traffic congestion created by drivers circling the block looking for a parking space.
Parking is one of many important components that contribute to successful, growing commercial districts, and curbside street parking adjacent to businesses provides customers with easy and convenient access.

Areas proposed for new parking meters
The new meters for the proposed streets, including side streets, are proposed to be $1 per hour ($0.25 for 15 minutes) and have a two-hour time limit. This is the lowest priced metered parking in the Vancouver. See map for city-wide metered rates
| Location | Area | PDF Map |
| Main Street | 12th to 18th, on Broadway from Ontario to Prince Edward and on adjoining side streets | Main St Area |
| Kingsway | Kingsway from Tyne Street, including the side streets (although meters are proposed only for McKinnon to Stamford at this time). | Kingsway Area |

Meter proposals based on Parking Occupancy Studies
Parking occupancy studies are used to gage the demand for parking in a given area. City staff count the number of vehicles that are parked on a specific block and at the same time, count the number of empty spaces available on the same block. If there are ten spaces on a block and there are nine vehicles parked, then 90% of the block is full. The optimal parking occupancy rate is 85%.
Many of the blocks in the proposed new metered areas were found to have an occupancy rate of 85% at various times of the day, with many observed to be 100% full (no empty spaces available). This means that there is very little or no on-street parking available and makes it difficult for customers trying to gain access to businesses in the area.

Information Sessions
The City has met with corresponding BIA (Business Improvement Association) directors and hosted information sessions in each of the proposed new metered areas to find out what businesses thought about parking in their areas and receive their feedback on the proposed changes to on-street parking.
