Greenway: Parkway
The
BC Parkway, a legacy from Expo 86, is an existing pedestrian and cycle
path that roughly parallels the Expo SkyTrain line from Vancouver's Clark
Drive area through Burnaby to New Westminster. The Parkway Greenway, when
completed, will extend this route west from Clark Drive, through the False
Creek Flats, across the Downtown Peninsula to Stanley Park. The BC Parkway
is already part of a regional trail system since it connects Vancouver
with Burnaby and New Westminster and with the inclusion of the Parkway
Greenway, users will be able to walk or cycle its entire length from Stanley
Park to New Westminster Quay on the Fraser River.
In Vancouver, the BC Parkway begins at Ontario and 5th Ave where it intersects
the Ontario Bikeway. The BC Parkway uses a combination of road/sidewalk
on quiet streets and off-street pathways for its 8.5 km length to Boundary
Road where Vancouver's route meets Burnaby's.
Destinations and areas of interest along the BC Parkway section of the
Parkway Greenway:
- Major Parks - John Hendry (Trout Lake) Park, Slocan Park
- Other Parks - mini parks and plazas sponsored by community groups
are located all along the route
- Sports activities - walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, swimming
in season at Trout Lake, playing fields, tennis
- Cultural Institutions - Vancouver Community College, Trout Lake Community
Centre
- Shopping - Commercial Drive ('The Drive'), Farmers Market at Trout
Lake (weekends in season)
