City Greenway: Ridgeway

Image: Rdigeway GreenwayGo to more information about the link between West Boulevard and Dunbar

The Ridgeway Greenway is virtually complete and extends approximately 13 km right across the City from Pacific Spirit Park to the City of Burnaby's Central Park. When City Council adopted the Vancouver Greenways Plan in 1995, they also designated a portion of the Ridgeway Greenway to be built as the City Greenway pilot project. Completed in 1998, the pilot project extended along 37th Ave from Granville St to Knight Street. Since then the Ridgeway has been extended east from Knight Street to Burnaby's border at Boundary Road and west from Granville St to Blanca Street with a small section still under review.

The Greenway walkway is located primarily along the north side of the street to take advantage of the many public open spaces along the route, the sunny side of Image: Ridgeway Greenwaythe street, and the view opportunities. Except for a mixed-use path in Jones Park, pedestrians use the sidewalk and cyclists share the road with vehicles along traffic-calmed streets. This cross-town route starts in the west on 8th Avenue at Blanca Street. It passes by one of Vancouver's most scenic lookouts at Discovery Street and 8th Avenue and through the leafy residential neighbourhoods of West Point Grey, Dunbar and Kerrisdale to 37th Avenue. East on 37th from Granville Street, the route passes by VanDusen Botanical Gardens , Queen Elizabeth Park, the Ontario Greenway, Mountainview Cemetery, Windsor Castle Neighbourhood Greenway and Kensington, Jones and Killarney Parks to the Vancouver/Burnaby border at Central Park.

The Ridgeway Greenway is primarily on residential streets that have been enhanced for pedestrian and cyclist safety and comfort. Landscaping, seating, signage, drinking fountains and public art make this a very interesting cycling or walking trip across the city through many of Vancouver's neighbourhoods.

Destinations and areas of interest along this Greenway include:

  • Major Parks - West Point Grey Park, Camosun Park, Pacific Spirit Park, VanDusen Botanical Gardens, Queen Elizabeth Park, Kensington Park, Killarney Park, Burnaby's Central Park
  • Other Parks - Cartier Park, Jones Park
  • Sports activities - walking, running, cycling, sports fields, children's playgrounds as well as disc golf, pitch and putt, and tennis at Queen Elizabeth Park
  • Attractions - arboretum, conservatory, Quarry garden and display gardens at Queen Elizabeth Park, VanDusen Botanical Gardens, public art works, city and mountain views
