Neighbourhood Greenway: John Street
Prior to the development of the John Street Greenway, pedestrians and cyclists were inconvenienced by a lack of access along the block of residential properties between John Street and Prince Edward Street. Local residents initiated the project and the greenway was created by acquiring a 3m east-west easement of a residential property to create a walkway between the two Streets. It was built and planted by local residents in 1994 with assistance from the City and has been maintained by the neighbourhood since.
Later, in 1997, the residents identified an opportunity to extend the greenway by upgrading the east-west lane connecting John Street to the cul-de-sac of 26th Avenue. This portion of the greenway includes a public art component. Together both portions create a much more pleasant and continuous connection between the neighbourhood and the commercial area along Main Street.
