Neighbourhood Greenway: Napier
Adjacent to the entrance of Britannia Community Centre, the end of a City street was transformed into a leafy, landscaped plaza and community gathering place thanks to the perseverance and commitment of the Britannia Neighbours in Action. Their idea was to enhance the pedestrian link between Commercial Drive, the Britannia Community Centre and Britannia Elementary and Secondary Schools. The new plaza would also provide an open community garden space that would be inviting for school children, shoppers and the local community.
Over a number of years, the group developed the idea into reality through several workshops and on-site information sessions. They canvassed the neighbourhood and local businesses for input and support. The community was involved in every aspect of the project from planning, to public art, to planting. In 2002, construction of the greenway was completed and the space has since become a focal point for community celebrations and festivals.
The impermeable surfaces of the road and sidewalks were removed and a paver path was built where the old road had been. The remaining area within the street corridor where the sidewalks once were, was landscaped. Seating areas were created using benches, chairs and rocks. Pedestrian scale lighting and bike racks were added along with 13 carved cedar posts and a meandering pebble mosaic art piece created by community members.
