Neighbourhood Greenway: Prince Albert

The Prince Albert Neighbourhood Greenway was developed in 1997 to beautify the neighbourhood, provide a safe place for children to play, and to create a community gathering place. The circular area in the design was developed from the residents idea to have a place to practice Tai Chi outdoors.

The design involved closing Prince Albert Street from 14th Avenue south to the lane. The Prince Albert Greenway Committee's big idea was to extend the concept of the garden into the street. The street was transformed into a strolling path for pedestrians and cyclists. Residents planted the greenway with perennials. New pedestrian scaled lighting was installed as were rain barrels collect water from the roof of the adjacent church for use in the gardens. Leaf-themed benches commissioned through the City's Public Art Program were created to allow people to sit, chat, and appreciate the view to the North Shore Mountains.
